Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any prior teaching experience?

Not at all! You do not need any previous experience or specific qualifications - only patience, dedication, and willingness to learn.

When can I start tutoring?

We are aiming to hold our first club meeting sometime in September, and our goal is to kickstart tutoring by October 5! Thank you for staying patient as we communicate with students and set up tutoring sessions.

What's the time commitment like?

The minimum requirement is only around 1 hour per week, but if you decide you want to teach more classes, then you can simply add more!

Do I have to prepare the material for each class?

It will be up to the student and their family to decide if they would prefer homework help or a more structured curriculum. For homework help, all you have to do is support the student in the worksheets/topics they are currently working on in class. For a structured curriculum, No Child Left Behind will provide the material corresponding to the student's level that you just have to follow. We will go over all of this during meetings, so don't feel overwhelmed!

Where can I learn how to be a tutor if I have never been one before? Are there workshops provided?

Yes, there will be tutor training sessions provided by us. We are still in the process of developing those. If you're not sure how to get started, we can coordinate a schedule where you initially observe classes taught by other club tutors in order to get a sense of what teaching is like, and then move on to your own independent classes. Just let us know your needs!

How will tutoring take place with the pandemic still occurring?

Tutoring classes will take place once a week (for each student) and will last 40-45 minutes. It will be a zoom meeting, and will be supervised by at least one of our officers. Although the pandemic does make connecting more challenging, I believe that with a bit of work and experimentation, we can take full advantage of online learning. If you are wondering what a specific class will look like, tutors can use google slides to teach lessons, accompanied by Kahoots, worksheets, videos, and other screen sharing tools.
